In Italy, there are an estimated 250 Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) per 100,000 persons each year. In the Lombardy region the incidence is higher than the national average, with an estimated 300 TBI per 100,000 annually. Fifty percent of the TBIs are due to trauma. Of those, road traffic crashes account for almost half (48%), accidental trauma (25%), sports trauma (10%), occupational trauma (8%), aggression (4%), and other (5%). Road crashes are a significant contributor to the injury burden and the Global Status Report on Road Safety estimates that over 2,500 people die each year on the roads of Italy. Traffic mortality rates are higher in the northern regions, with a clear north-south decreasing gradient.
