The National Road Safety Action Plan 2005–2010, indentified that road crashes are of huge economic and health importance for Indonesia. It states that “each year hospital records show that over 30,000 people are killed and several hundred thousand injured or crippled”. Many of these persons will be disabled for the rest of their lives, in some cases perpetuating poverty for their families. Over the last five years it is estimated that over 150,000 people have died and over 3 million have been injured and our nation has lost around Rp. 30,82 trillion (US$ 3,5 billion) through property damage, medical costs and lost productivity. Sadly many of these casualties are our young people who are the future of our country’.
