The economic costs associated with road traffic injuries (RTIs) in Zambia are estimated at approximately 3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Road traffic crashes are on the increase in Zambia, especially with the rise car ownership. From available records, from 2006 to 2010, the average cases of reported RTA were 19,000–20,500 per year. In 2007, 1,266 people were killed in road traffic crashes in Zambia.
A prospective study from University Teaching Hospital Lusaka in Zambia identified that the most frequently injured region of the body was the head. There is high mortality and disability in the injured patients usually from the brain injury sustained.
