Injury still remains the leading cause of death and disability in young adults in Georgia. Among trauma patients who survive to reach hospital, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of death and disability. Annually there are approximately 1,221 TBI patients admitted to hospitals (whole population of Georgia is 4,436,000). The main cause of traumatic brain injury is road traffic crashes with very little data available on incidence in Georgia.
Traffic deaths are currently increasing at 16% and injuries are increasing at 28% per year. Around 66% of the deaths occur in urban areas and over 30% of those killed nationally are pedestrians – almost double the percentage in many West European countries. The biggest growth among those killed on Georgian roads is occurring in the age group of 8–15 year old children where there has been a 117% increase in deaths between 2005 and 2006.
