Mortality rates from road traffic crashes have increased significantly in Albania since the early 1990s. Traffic related accidents in Albania are 3.5 percent higher than in other Eastern and Central European countries. In 2009 there were 1,465 road traffic crashes; 378 people lost their lives, 374 people suffered serious injuries, and 1,081 people suffered light injuries. Road traffic crashes are one of the main causes of traumatic brain injuries, and treatments to improve outcomes for victims are needed in Albania.
