Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in young adults in the United Kingdom. Among trauma patients who survive to reach hospital, traumatic brain injury is a common cause of death. Annually there are approximately 1,000,000 TBI patients attending emergency departments; of these over 150,000 are admitted to hospitals with an average cost of £15,000 per hospitalisation.
