Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in young adults in the Colombia with at least 22,000 will dying during the first year of injury. Among trauma patients who survive to reach hospital, traumatic brain injury is a common cause of death. It has been estimated that trauma related death and disability reduces life expectancy by 2.26 years in Colombia. Violence together with road traffic injuries constitute the fourth highest cause of years of life lost (disability and death) in the general population in Colombia. Trauma is responsible for 18 to 25% of deaths in Colombia during the last 10 years,70% of hospitalized cases had brain trauma.
